Let’s Celebrate Mrsphatandnaptural Turns 3!

Mrsphatandnaptural Turns 3 years old today! Whoo hoo! I may not be where some have risen to in 3 years, but I’m still here! Over these 3 short years I have found many new friends both online and in person. I’ve attended, held, and hosted many events. I’ve even traveled to 2 states that I had never been to for just to attend Plus Sized Fashion and or Natural Hair events. I’ve have also been featured on a few online sites, namely Essence.com.

Still I’d have to say the biggest “get” from the last 3 years of blogging has to be tapping into a supportive sisterhood that I didn’t even realize existed. They are an encouraging, loving, creative bastion of knowledge and experiences that I can’t seem to go a day without…( okay so I’m a social media junkie) lol. That aside I love being apart of this collective!

 

As I move forward with Mrsphatandnaptural some things will change. In the spirit of serving those who need what I’m cooking up, I will commit to staying honest, current, and open to God using me. I will continue to give you all the tips tricks and styles of the latest conversation. I will do the product reviews and include you into my battle with this belly! But I will also share with you my love for God and all things good for your soul!
Remember to celebrate yourself! And just know God doesn’t make any mistakes, and that includes you!

Fit Phatty: 5 Tips To A Healthier You

We have all heard that being healthy has nothing to do with your weight. Even though the societal view is that fatter woman are undesirable and unhealthy. It’s all about the narrative that you allow to replay in your head…but I digress. I’ll save that conversation for another time. However some of us have to fight our fat on a daily basis. Between genetics, medical conditions, and lifestyle, it’s just not easy to be ” thin” or a healthy weight ( whatever that is for you) with out working at it. Try not to worry so much about having a flat tummy as having a healthy life. Aside from getting a surgery, or taking a prescription medicine, I will always have to employ tools to help me stay on track.

There will be set backs and fall offs, but always remember with health, every effort is a good effort! I’ve been on a weight yo-yo for majority of my life, (but I wish I was as fat as I was when I thought I was too fat!). It has not been easy to maintain the best healthy lifestyle. It’ so easy to fall into a pattern of not counting calories or exercising.  My biggest challenge of all is of course not eating bad. But my body tells me she’s wants a clean detox.  So I get back at it.

Here are my 5 ways that I get back in the fight with this fat!

1. Count those calories!
I use My Fitness Pal. It is really simple to set up an account with My Fitness Pal if you haven’t already done so! There is no pressure with the app, it’s all self-discipline. I get to keep track of my current weight and goal weight. By going day by day tracking my food and exercise practice (and the lack of exercise) My Fitness Pal then gives me an estimated number that I can weigh in a certain number of weeks if I maintain my day (good or bad). It’s good motivation.

2. Measure your food!
This is important to be able to keep track of your calories easily. If you don’t have a scale for food, buy one. I also use my measuring cup to measure food!
3. Don’t starve!

If you feel hungry, eat! There are good carbs out there! Instead of an unhealthy snack grab some nuts, a fruit, or even a baked sweet potato! Whatever you enjoy, keep track in your food diary.

 

4. Get moving! The more you move, the more calories you burn. Aim for at least 30 mins a day of cardio and strength training, and aim to walk around more. If you don’t join a gym you can exercise right at home using www.pinterest.com for work out ideas.

5. Invest in health!
Living a healthy lifestyle takes effort, but it is worth it. Purchase some hand weights and a few different exercise equipment for home such as a jump rope, resistance bands, ankle weights, kettlebell, etc. (even if you are a gym rat, keep equipment in the house.) You can even purchase bigger equipment such as a stationary bike, treadmill, elliptical, etc., on www.craigslist.org if you rather get it at a cheaper price!

Remember don’t  let the media or scale define you. You must love yourself at every stage of your life. Loving yourself means do not be so hard or yourself. There is a difference between discipline and punishment. And keeping a healthy body is the ultimate form of love.
Most importantly remember to rest. You burn calories in your sleep, but most importantly, you cannot run on fumes. Living a healthy lifestyle requires all of you, mentally, emotionally, and physically. It will be frustrating some days, and stagnant too. But keeping that body healthy is the main goal.

You rarely see bodies in this position, let alone a body that looks like mine. We're conditioned to think about how we look ALL the time, especially when taking photos. Truth is, our bodies fluctuate through the day & we'll look different in different lighting and different angles. It's SO draining trying to slim down a double chin, suck in your stomach or position your arms so they look smoother and slimmer. Photos are supposed to capture & to create a memory. They aren't supposed to be perfect and curated all the time. When I look back at this photo I'll remember feeling confident and worthy and loved. I'll remember feeling emotionally strong but vulnerable enough to allow my insecurities to fuel me. I'll also remember a body that has been able to carry me through the good times and the bad times, through the trauma & through therapy. A body that has protected me from others, but that has also protected me from myself. A body thats maybe "too much" or "too large" but a body that houses courage, kindness and love. And maybe all of those things are so strong and powerful that a bigger vessel is needed to carry them 💗 #iamenough

As if being the former First Lady of the free world wasn’t dope enough. Aunty Chelly continues to take us higher dropping body goals, life goals and most recently vacation goals.

As the rest of us are just trying to make it through the day, Uncle Bam and Aunty Chelly have been on a most epic world tour. From golfing in Cali, to yachting it up with Richard Branson, chilling in Tahiti, and the latest traipsing through Tuscany!

Doing her usual and customary Fashion Slayage our forever Flotus set the internet a blaze with her choice of wears for the Italian leg of their Vacay. So far this Club Monico, BCBG ensemble is my most favorite. Although this look is uber casual, and seems effortlessly chic, the BCBG pants alone are $178. That being said, I give you the Wear It Wednesday, Flotus edition for under $135.00.

5 Hot Fall Colors And How To Add Them To Your Plus Sized Wardrobe

Well it’s here! The Fall season is upon us. You get to sport the boots, sweaters, and jackets we all love! Although I’ll definitely be pulling out some of last season’s wears,I always added a few pieces from the new trends to freshen up my wardrobe. This year I’m going with some of Pantone’s hottest colors to keep me up to date.

Every year Pantone Institute delivers its report with the names and code numbers of the hottest colors for each season. This Fall the colors were lead by the Blue Color Family. Here’s their official statement:

The desire for tranquility, strength, and optimism have inspired a Fall 2016 color palette that is led by the Blue family.

Other than blue jeans, I’m really not a fan of blue…however there are quite a few colors on the wheel I am loving! Now you know I’m not trying to break the bank, so most of these pieces are well under $100.  Here are my five favorite colors of the Pantone Fall 2016 Colors :

First off I have to say this dress is one of those pieces that gives instant confidence! Nothing makes you feel as good as a great Dress! I picked it up from Fashion To Figure last year &25 buy one get one free at TheCurvycon. I’m not really a dress girl so I don’t wear it often. I tend to wear more dresses in the summer so I pulled this one out this week.

From the time I put it on I realized something that never dawned on me before. Fit & Flare is my perfect silhouette. I’ve said it before,  one of my body flaws that I dress to camouflage is my midsection. This shaped dress ( sometimes called a Skater) makes my flaws fabulous!

The dress shaped my body in just the right places. It hugged the top, and flared out at the waste, creating the affect of a well defined high waistline.

The dress is strapless so to make it office appropriate I threw on a denim Ballero that I thrifted a few months back. A statement necklace that I picked up for $5 at Walmart, and a silver clutch that I got at Ross for less, my summer staple fringe sandals, and some silver hoops complete this look.

Conclusion: Fit & Flare makes my flaws look fabulous!

Hot In The Office: 3 Ways To Keep The Business In Your Business Casual Summer Wardrobe

Finally we are getting some hot days! I love summer fashion! The flowing dresses, bright colors, and light air feel to the clothes just puts a smile in my heart! As with many offices, my job has a business casual office attire. Although there is no clear definition of “ business casual” sometimes people forget the business and add a little too much casual.

In the warmer months we usually get that not so subtle reminder from HR. You know the one informing us of the obvious warmer weather, imploring us to use good judgement when dressing for working, and asking us not to embarrass ourselves, fellow coworkers, or the company. Yet and still some people don’t get the hint.

Casually Speaking

Navigating the difference between what’s appropriate for business casual and what not may not be easy. In my office we have certain restrictions which are pretty standard.
1. No sheer or see through clothing ( yes it needs to be stated).
2. Shoes must either have a strap on the back, or closed toes.
3. No cutoff shorts
4. No Tshirts with graphics
5. No swim wear ( yes it has happened)
My summer staples are maxi dresses and skirts, light denim, and bright colored everything. I incorporate these items in heavy rotation for work and play. So, I have a few guidelines of my own that I use to keep it stylish and appropriate.

This one is my saving grace! I usually keep a light sweater or denim jacket on the back of my chair. You know those pretty sleeves summer dresses and shirts? Guess what you can wear them to the office! Just keep a blazer, jacket or sweater handy to cover your arms and voila! Office appropriate.

Spring Has Sprung And I Fell Off My Fitness Routine

So it’s April, summer is around the corner and I fell off the fitness train! And when I say off I meant all the way off. I got to a place where I wasn’t doing much about my health and believe me before I stepped on the scale my jeans told me! But as I said in my last fitness post👉( Fight Of A Fit Phatty)

“When you fall off don’t stay off!”

I’ve gained 10lbs back and I’ve been eating pretty crappy. I let life get in the way, nope scratch that; I got in my own way.

No excuses, time to get back to health! Knowing is only half the battle, now it time to get back into the fight with this fat!

Here are my chosen weapons of war :

  •  Liquid Gold! A gallon of water a day! Yikes that’s a lot of water! But water is the key to good health! I try to just drink 6 bottles of water so I’m not looking at a gallon all day! If you don’t like plain water add fruit for a good taste and detox!
  • Hand to Mouth! I mean snacks! Not the fudgy gooey kind, something good and healthy but filling! I love nature valley bars or flavored rice cake minis, fruit, and nuts. Eat something that is filling between meals and make sure it’s not empty calories!
  • Beat the clock! It’s no secret that most people don’t exercise because of time, but you have to do it. I wish I could go to the gym and rock out for an hour but my life doesn’t work that way! But you can do 20 minute work outs 3 times a day. That will burn the same amount of calories as a continuous hour. I like high intensity workouts that you can do in 20 minutes and burn the same amount of calories or more! Walk at lunch a few days a week, or six 15 minutes bursts if you have to. whatever works for you, do it!
  • Click fitness! I like to explore Pinterest and YouTube for new exercises. Remember to do the correct forms though! 10 correct moves goes a lot further than 50 incorrect. Last year I could only do ONE push up! I kept trying and now I’m at 10. It’s your heart rate pumping that will be the benefit!
  • Eyes to see! In every aspect of life we need someone to look to and something to aspire towards. Whether it’s a family member, friend, or favorite social media celebrity, let someone else’s journey inspire you.
  • Don’t wait until you feel like it! Honestly we will never feel like it most of the time lol! Sometimes I feel like today will be my rest day just like yesterday and I never get anything done.
  • Reap Wisely! I always say this! Don’t reward yourself with food or punish your self with brutal exercise! Instead reach a goal and purchase something else besides food! If you’ve fallen from fit grace do not over work yourself! Start off slowly and ease your way back in.
