Know The Edge- How I Got Over Thining Edges

Girl, I lost my edges! Well not all, but my hair was really thinning out, like most women of color, I pride myself on laid edges and a good ponytail. But if those edges thin out, that ponytail ain’t so laid. I’d come to face these two identical thinning spots on both sides of my head, as a sign of the times. By times, I mean getting older. So, I tried to work around this now problematic area, I wore less ponytails, and when wearing a ponytail, I ensured it was not pulled too tightly or too low. But this wasn’t enough! I was losing strands and it was too noticeable to me!

I do not wear many protective styles, (not that I am against them), so besides a ponytail, my hair is never pulled tightly. I am a very proud LAZY natural, meaning, I typically do the least amount of work to take care of natural hair. My main goal is always healthy hair. I do not venture out and try a lot of different products, I know what works and usually stick with that, and if I try something new it’s usually in the same family. I stick to Leave in’s, oils, and cream. The LOC method guarantees healthy, hydrated hair.

But, recently some hair has begun sprouting in those thin spots! *Praise break*! So, I looked back over the past three years and I noticed a trend, I was STRESSED and it showed in my hair. In my last post, I discussed my bout of mild depression, and how I began to feel better with exercise. But, I had no clue the toll my hair would pay. Never the less, I am glad that the fight isn’t over and I AM NOT LOSING MY HAIR! This transition into new hair on my edges inspired me to help you with struggle edges, if you ever find yourself in my shoes, whether it is from stress, tight protective styles, weight loss surgery, etc. I am here for you:

  1. Oil and Stimulation

I live by Olive Oil . It’s good for your hair and to eat! So, it’s a two for one special in my house, I purchase the biggest bottles usually from Costco. I always rub olive oil throughout my hair, but during these crucial times, I rub a good amount on my edges and give my scalp a gentle massage. Stimulation promotes growth by getting the blood circulation going! So, this should be a weekly practice all over your head.

  1. Limit stress

Tune out the noise. Life can be a whirlwind of emotions and sometimes that roller coaster takes us on a drop we never expected. But, we have the power to limit stressers. Avoid bringing your work life into your home space, meditate and pray, pick up yoga , write it out. Whatever works, but we must release that negative energy!

  1. Drink Water

I can not stress it enough how important it is to drink water. It’s great for your hair, skin, and health. God put it here for a reason, so I trust His judgement!

  1. Protect your hair

    71-80 Ten protective style tips

When wearing a protective style, your main concern should always be your hair health. Before styling, properly wash, condition, and LOC it up. If braiding, be sure to tell your stylist to make sure not to pull on your edges, nape or scalp too tightly. Also avoid tight or low ponytails

Of course, you should always take precaution when it comes to hair health, but remember what goes on in the inside will always affect the outside! Don’t let stress claim your edges or time! Keep it cute!

Honey, Olive Oil, Aloe 3 Of Natures Summer Gifts For Healthy Long Natural Hair

Honey, Aloe Gel, Olive Oil! My Favorite Summer Hair Products For Shiny Healthy Natural Hair!Honey, Aloe Gel, Olive Oil! My Favorite Summer Hair Products For Shiny Healthy Natural Hair!
If long healthy natural hair is your goal. Summer is Gods gift to you.

Most people retain more hair in the Summer. Due to the warm weather we naturally do things like drink more water, get more activity, and wear lower manipulation styles. Just doing these 3 things will increase your hair growth potential.

Now add in 3 of natures Summer gems and your on the way to waist length. Maybe not that long but you’ll definitely see added growth.

Honey– You can use raw honey, organic honey, or I just grab the same honey I put in my tea. Honey is a humectant. This means it naturally draws moisture out of the air into your hair. So use it as a pre poo ( recipe below), add it to your shampoo, or you can even use it as a great DIY deep conditioner.

Used to: Prevent or remedy dry hair. Increase manageability, and add shine to the hair.

Tip: if you use too much your hair can get soggy. It will be so soft that it won’t hold braids or twists.

For more information and my deep conditioning recipe click here – Honey Be Natural

Honey, Olive Oil, Aloe Vera My 3 favorite summertime products for healthy long natural Hair

Olive Oil- Again I use the same olive oil that I cook with. Olive oil is high in vitamin E which strengthens the hair shaft. Also the oil is good for the scalp. Most of the time I use it to seal the moisture into my hair after I wash it. Also it can be put in a spray bottle with some water and use it to re-twist at night. Or you can heat it and apply it to your hair as a hot oil treatment.

Used to: Seal in moisture. Add shine and coat the scalp.
Tip: properly moisturized hair reduces the occurrence of single strand knots, a decreases detangling time. If you have a problem with single strand knots, try oil rinsing.

Here are some other ways we use olive oil – That Blessed Oil

Aloe Vera Gel- I use Aloe Vera gel, but you can get the juice or cut open the plant. Aloe has many benefits for hair. The biggest is its packed with amino acids which strengthens the hair shaft. It increases circulation to the scalp which stimulates hair growth. It’s also a natural humectant, so it draws in the moisture from the air. And the super benefit is, it has anti bacterial ingredients which helps to combat dandruff and other bacteria that can form on the scalp.
Used to: balance ph in hair. Add moisture and shine, promote hair growth. Cleanse the scalp.

Tip: if you have an area that is slow to grow try massaging the area 2-3 times per week with some aloe Vera gel. This will stimulate circulation and increase hair growth to that area.

Here is my Summertime Fine prepoo recipe:

4-5 tbsp. aloe Vera gel
3 tbsp. of olive oil
2 tbsp. of honey.

Mix everything well and apply this on your hair from end to edge. The ends of the hair is the oldest part, and furthest away from the natural sebum the comes from your scalp. Leave on for about 20-25 minutes then shampoo and proceed with your normal routine.
This is a hydrating hair mask. If your hair is dull and dry this is just what the hair doctor ordered.

You can use this about once a month or as often as you deep condition which shouldn’t be more than 2 times per month.

now if you are not a DIY’er you can find commercial products with these ingredients in them. Or as I said earlier you can also just add them to your favorite shampoos, conditioners and or leave-in. (don’t add honey to your leave-in, it needs to be washed out).

Do you prefer to buy or are you a mixologist? Either way this is a simple and easy way to increase moisture and shine to your hair this summer! We’d love to hear some of your favorite    DIY beauty recipes! Please drop us a comment.

The One Thing You Are Not Doing That Will Make Your Natural Hair Journey Easier!

If there was one thing you could do that would make your natural hair journey easier would you do it? It’s so simple, yet so many naturalistas miss this valued resource in the natural hair community. Better yet, even more don’t even know it exist! The one thing you can do is attend a natural hair meet up. It’s better than buying all the products in the isle, binge watching your favorite YouTube vlogger, and reading blog posts til your eyes are tired.

How many times have you watched a YouTube tutorial, followed all the steps, and didn’t get the desired result? Or read a blog post, ran out and bought the product, followed all the steps only to fail? If this has ever happened to you, you need to go right now and buy a ticket to the next meet up in your area!

Now I could go through a laundry list of reason why natural hair meet ups are a valued resource, but I’m gonna pick my top three reasons.

Face 2 Face Education

Yes that’s correct many of the local bloggers and vloggers, attend, host and guest speak at meet ups. So what’s better than a one on one conversation about your issue? Depending on the topic, and focus of the meet up there may be a panel discussion / Q&A or better yet they may just be mingling and you could ask them your questions personally. Not to mention there are usually tons of fellow Natralistas that have had the same problem you have and are more then willing to share their solutions with you. Very often natural hair meetups have:

1. Hair Style Demos
2. Product Demos
3. Expert Panels
4. Brand Representative To Answer Questions

Product For Free 99

Usually one or more full sized product will be included in the swag bags! All thought I’ve never been to one like this, but at the very least you will get samples and valuable discounts towards the purchase of products. I’ve always gotten between 1-5 full sized products as well as samples. This is a low cost way to build your product stash. The investment of the ticket purchase is usually a lot lower then the cost of product you will receive. Also, there are usually great give away sponsors, for prizes, raffles, and games.

Curlfriends

And the very last but yet equally as important resource that natural hair meetups provide is access to the your local Curlfriends! There’s no substitute for surrounding yourself with like minded Curlies! They not only provide support and encouragement but also much needed comfort in the journey. I have meet so many wonderful young ladies that I would have never met in any other circumstance. Some are business owners, bloggers, long term naturalists, hair stylist, and so on.

There one last thing I feel is important to mention, you have to support your local natural hair community! That’s how brands decide if they are going to sponsor events, and or sell products in your area. If you don’t have a natural hair community in your area why not start one ?

Are you apart of a local natural hair community? If so give them a shout out in the comments! If not and you are looking to join one, drop a comment and we’d be more that happy to get you connected!

Please follow us on Facebook , Instagram and Twitter for more information, and inspiration!

Frugal Frogal: Natural Hair Regimen Under $10

Frugal Frogal
Frugal Frogal

Yes ! You read it right ! A natural hair care regimen, for less than the price of my favorite shampoo! Right now my most favorite shampoo is Carol’s Daughter Marabella Shampoo. My Carol’s Daughter shampoo cost $10. Yeah, umm hmmm, ten dollars is my budget. So that’s the first criteria. The second is the products needed to be easily accessible, meaning they can be picked up anywhere. The third criteria is it can’t be too much of a departure from my normal regimen. I always see a lot of post about a shampoo or a conditioner under $10. In fact one of my first post was about shampoos under $12. But this one is a complete regimen under $10, from wash to style.

  • On my quest to “Live Richer”,  I am always looking to “find money”. So I’m taking all of my spending to task, it’s not forever but for now I’m trimming the fat, tossing coins into the piggy bank. By nature I’m a modern day treasure hunter so frugal finds and discount shopping gives me life!

So are you ready to slice your natural hair product budget like a loaf of bread?

Yes everything comes back to food with me! 🙂 ! True to form we at mrsphatandnaptural.com promote healthy hair care above all else! We don’t believe in sacrificing good hair health for any reason. That being said, we want to find quality products that will give the desired result for a fraction of our normal hair product budget.

You should not compromise healthy hair for a style or a dollar. But, If you could get your natural hair regimen under $10 would you do it? Keep reading and let me show you how.

Frugal Frogal

Prepoo: if you don’t normally prepoo than here’s an inexpensive introduction to one of the process I use. It’s the hot towel method. It cost nothing. All you need is a hand towel, ziplock bag, water and a microwave. Free ninety nine!

Cleanse :Shampoo is a very important part of every Curly’s journey. I found this VO5 Strawberries N Cream at CVS for $1.25.

Conditioner : This is a very necessary process that can not be skipped. This one actually came free with another product, Hollywood Beauty Olive Cholesterol deep conditioning crème. Cost me nothing, it was attached to the styler. Free ninety nine!

Frugal FrogalSeal: I usually use the LOC method I want to make sure the moisture is sealed into my hair. That’s what works to keep my hair managed. Oldie but goodie Blue Magic Coconut Oil. Yes it’s grease, what’s wrong with that yo mama used grease and her mama used grease. So why you can’t use it? Lol no seriously though, I did a little research and found that although this does not add any nutrients to your stands it does work as an excellent sealer to loc in moisture. Cost me $2.99 at CVS.

Styler: I don’t normally use stylers but in this regimen the styler is important to pull together any look. Hollywood Beauty Olive Crème hairless for dry hair. Priced just right at $2.99 at CVS

Including tax this cost me a wapping $7.28! Yup! Way under $10. And I got $. 50 in extra care bucks back to be used on a later purchase! Whoop whoop! (Found money $12.75 added to long term savings)Frugal Frogal

I know getting the products is only part of the equation, the other part is the how-to, so here is how I used them:

  • Pre-poo- I sprayed my hair down with water, put a wet hand towel in a ziplock bag and mic it for 3 minutes, (be careful the towel and water are hot)wring the excess water, (again you may want to use tongs) I then wrapped my head in the towel, and placed a bag on my head for 20 min. I normally se a lot of oils in my hair, so this is a way of using those oils already on my hair one last time. The hot towel will open up the hair shaft allowing the oils to penetrate the shaft.
  • Shampoo- I then finger detangle and section my hair into 4 or 6 sections. I wash my hair section by section. Now, because the VO5 is a sulfate shampoo be careful not to tangle your hair. The shampoo has a very pleasant scent and lathers very well. I could hear my hair squeak! Lol
  • Condition and Seal- I run the conditioner through my hair, keeping in the same section by section process that I used to wash it. Put a bag on my head and let it sit for at least 1 hour or 30 min if you use a bonnet/ hooded dryer. Then rinse out section by section. I dry my hair with a t-shirt, squeezing as much moisture as possible into the t-shirt. Then while the hair is damp, I apply the Blue Magic Coconut Oil Crème to seal the moisture into hair shaft. This is the oil for my LOC method.
  • Crème- While the hair is still in sections I apply the Olive Crème. Section by section. This is the crème for my LOC method.
  • Proceed to style as usual, I blow dry my hair on the coolest setting, section by section. At this time if you need a trim, this is the time to do it.

This process left my hair soft and fluffy! It feels very strong. Although I wouldn’t say the product are the same quality, they are good enough to work in the lean times.

Hair tip: always rinse your hair with cool water, be sure to deep condition often, and seal hair with oil and crème after each shampoo.

I will be using these products for the next month, to see the progress and styles I’m able to create with Frugal Frogalthese products, follow us on Facebook and Instagram. Please leave comments and suggest below. If you have any frugal hair finds please let us know! I also challenge you to find a hair care regimen for $10 or less!

It’s the Frugal Frogal Mrsphatandnaptural signing off! See ya Phatty,

Top Five Ways To Take The Fuss Out Of Fabulousness

2014 Top 5 Fuss Free Fab Tools
2014 Top 5 Fuss Free Fab Tools

Hey Sistas, well 2014 is coming to a close and we are knocking on the door of 2015. Last New Year’s Day, I made a promise to my family for the year of 2014; I would enjoy my life more and get back to loving me and sharing my wonderfulness with the world. LOL! Little did I know what God had in store for us. At that time, I didn’t know that I would start a blog to share my natural journey, and my struggle finding fashionable affordable plus sized items that fit my style. By the way my style is, I love the high maintenance look but I’m lazy so it has to be easy! 🙂 Most of the time I have the plan in my head but, I don’t work on it until the last minute.
This brings me to my Top Five favorites of 2014. This was not easy because I am the shortcut queen. So everything that I love involves Taking the Fuss Out of Fabulousness. I truly believe you don’t have to spend all day to look like you do. Now don’t get me wrong you can’t live on a short, sometimes you have to do the work, but my philosophy is if I lay a great foundation I can skate a little. With my hair, I make sure I practice ideal cleansing and conditioning regularly so I don’t have worry about breakage, thinning, and loosing my edges. Same goes for my wardrobe I try to buy staple or capsule pieces that are easy to put together to look fab with out much fuss.

  • image1- My two favorites are a tied for #1, the Ecostyler Olive Oil Gel and Cantu Shea Butter Leave In are absolutely my favorite short cut tools of 2014. You can find them any and everywhere. From Walmart, Sally’s, to your local beauty supply and or drug store. For me there aren’t many drawbacks I can name. They work very well together and keep my hair looking healthy and shinny. I must admit for most of 2014 I really didn’t use much else on my hair.  The only draw back is if you are too heavy handed with the Cantu you can get a white residue on your hair. I use this combo on my Puff which is my goto style, and it keeps my edges slayed and laid. This is also the combo I use on my twist outs. My entire family uses the Cantu, and we all have different hair types. I tend to use them together but they are both equally fierce all by themselves. When ever a Curly asks me to recommend products, first a ask them about there wash routine and the next step is this recommendation. One of the best things is  the price point. For the price you can’t beat the results. I know people who pay a lot of money for expensive products and their hair doesn’t like it! In January I did my final mini chop cutting about 4-5 inches of permed hair off and from then on I used almost nothing but these two items to style my hair, until about August when I was introduced to the Carmacare line. I feel like I can’t name them a fav because I only used them for about 4 months of the year, but they definitely get a more than honorable mention. I love the Seal-n-Shine and the B’leave-in Conditioner. You can get them at www.carmacare.net .image

  • 2- My number two is the Spanx Stockings. Now this breaks one of my rules. They are a little expensive for a disposable item, but I like to call them resposable. They wash well and regain their shape perfectly. Being a big girl that hates shape wear is not good, and I’m imagenot one of those Phattys that have that cute little pooch, nope I got belly! These stockings are the truth, because they hold it down and doesn’t squeeze the life out of me. I usually pick them up when they are on sale. The fit is perfect for Apple Shaped Phattys like me. It’s one of those things that you can wear everyday. Yes, did I mention that I hate shape wear? That being said these are on my favorites list. I am very particular about wearing stockings because the last thing I need is them rolling down and settling under my belly making it look even bigger, but these come all the way up and they stay there.
  • 3- Number three Mac Ruby Woo. This color seems to look great on everybody. After all who doesn’t love a red lippie? When I first saw it my cousin Mekkus was wearing it and I was compelled to tell her how great it looked. She is a brown girl like Kelly Rowland. Then I imagesaw one of my coworkers with this fab red lip and she also said it was Ruby Woo and she’s an olive colored white woman. I have a tan complexion (yes that is Rihanna representing me,lol) and it looks great on me too. That’s why it makes the list. It surely takes the fuss out of Fab. If you are like me and you don’t have time to spend 2 hours contouring and blending or how ever long it takes. Get you some eyeliner, mascara and some Ruby Woo and let it do what it do.
  • 4- Number four is my Strawberry Water. I don’t like to drink water but of course to be healthy it’s very necessary. I know a lot of places sell fruit infused water and special water bottles, but as I mentioned earlier my favs are easy. When first started doing this I would just imagebuy a gallon of water from the store and a bag of frozen strawberries, put the strawberries in the jug with 3-5 pks of Splenda. Let it sit overnight and drink it all day. I started doing this to help me stay full, but little did I gather the affects the strawberry water would have on my life. My skin and hair love it and yes it helps curb my appetite. Eventually I purchased a water bottle with a ice tube to help keep it cold. I happen to like strawberry water but you can try any frozen fruit you like. I know a lot of people do all kinds of other recipes that have a lot of steps but for me this is the best way because it’s so easy and taste great so that makes it easy to stick to.

5- My 2014 number five fav is the LOC Method. This oh, this woah, I love this and so does Froesha ( the name of my hair). If you don’t know what this is, it’s definitely one of the greatest short cuts to imagehealthy hair that I have found thus far. If you don’t have time to deep condition often this is what you should do. Once I started doing this there was no turning back. For me I do this with every wash. So you know it’s easy! 🙂 I use Carmacare B’leave in as my L. Carmacare Seal-n-Shine is my O. My C is Cantu or Carmacare Hair Soufflé Shea Butter. I’ve also had success with (l) Cantu leave in (o) Olive Oil (c) Soultanicals Marula- Muru. The process is so easy, after you wash and condition your hair, you apply the leave in of your choice, it’s best to use a liquid leave in if it’s your 1st time doing this. Next you seal the hair with an oil. Last apply a butter or a cream as the final moisture lock. I finger comb through each step and evenly distribute the layers throughout my tresses. I have air dried, twisted and blow dried after this process it really didn’t make a difference this method keeps my hair moisturized until my next wash. It’s one of those style as usual processes.

Well girls that wraps up my Top Five ways to Take the Fuss Out of Fabulousness for 2014. I pray that we will all move into 2015 with great expectations, plans and goals to keep going higher in our lives. We at Mrsphatandnaptural.com have some challenging and exciting imagethings planned for 2015. We love a fresh start, so here’s to a new year and a new start!
See ya Phatty!

Or even worse, products that we hate! Don’t get me wrong there are truly great products out there, but sometimes we over-look the items that we already have right in our very own kitchens! But why would we automatically think to check our cupboards for hair products? I can remember getting yelled at for over using something that was intended for food.
