“And God said, “Let the earth sprout vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind, on the earth.” And it was so. The earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed according to their own kinds, and trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening and there was morning, the third day.”
Genesis 1:11-13 ESV
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve sped through the creation story, never recognizing the blessing in divine order. God created fruit beating trees, vegetation, and plants yielding seed .i.e “food” days before there was anything living to eat the food. Three days before creating man,on the 6th day, and two days before creating the animals on the fifth day.
On the third day God provided provision. Before there was even a need. He had not yet created Adam and Eve yet he made provisions for them.
This is exactly the way God makes provision for us! Well in advance of our need, God has already provided the “food”. But how often are we speeding by the creation because it seems insignificant?
Or maybe we have a picture of what said blessing should look like, so we can’t acknowledge the blessing when it shows up, because it’s not packaged the way we think it should be.
Well, we know what happened to the last “people” that rejected a blessing because it didn’t appear they way they thought it should right? Ok then, enough said.
The challenge for us is to see the provision and care, even when it is different than we expect, because God is God, his ways are not like our ways, and His thought are higher than our thoughts.
First we must have faith. When we put your faith in Christ, God commissions himself to protect, provide, and care for us.
When you put your faith in Christ, the bible tells us we will have what ever we so desire. God always provides for his children, though often it is not in the way we expect or hope.
So as I bring this message to a close I leave you with the following scripture
Matthew 7:7-8 NIV
“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.”
Mrsphatandnaptural Turns 3 years old today! Whoo hoo! I may not be where some have risen to in 3 years, but I’m still here! Over these 3 short years I have found many new friends both online and in person. I’ve attended, held, and hosted many events. I’ve even traveled to 2 states that I had never been to for just to attend Plus Sized Fashion and or Natural Hair events. I’ve have also been featured on a few online sites, namely Essence.com.
Still I’d have to say the biggest “get” from the last 3 years of blogging has to be tapping into a supportive sisterhood that I didn’t even realize existed. They are an encouraging, loving, creative bastion of knowledge and experiences that I can’t seem to go a day without…( okay so I’m a social media junkie) lol. That aside I love being apart of this collective!
As I move forward with Mrsphatandnaptural some things will change. In the spirit of serving those who need what I’m cooking up, I will commit to staying honest, current, and open to God using me. I will continue to give you all the tips tricks and styles of the latest conversation. I will do the product reviews and include you into my battle with this belly! But I will also share with you my love for God and all things good for your soul!
Remember to celebrate yourself! And just know God doesn’t make any mistakes, and that includes you!
What’s good my good people? It’s been a minute since I’ve posted. It’s been 7 weeks, and in blog life that like 2 years lol. Allow my to reintroduce myself.
My name is Uhura. I am the founder of Mrsphatandnaptural, and I’m not a blogger. I’m a resource.
My hiatus started with me trying to find my way through mourning the loss of a good friend. I told myself I needed to take some time to deal with what I was feeling. The days rolled into weeks and here we are! During these weeks I had to reevaluate my direction and revisit my motivation for starting this platform.
Here’s my why: Originally the idea started out of my frustration in trying to find a dress for a friend’s wedding.I felt as if there were limited options for me. Most of the dresses weren’t flattering, and even fewer were fashionably up to date. Everything I found made me feel older, bigger, or out of fashion. I was so discouraged by the process that I ended up not going to the wedding. When I began my transition to natural hair, I struggled with finding the right products, routine, and regime to get my hair healthy and fit for public viewing. I knew I had to do something for other women struggling with these issues.
It is God’s will I have a blog. My objective is first and foremost to honor my purpose and spread the word of God’s Love. Second is combination showcase and information platform for my Sisters. This has been such a blessing to me, I have virtually and physically meet so many people whom have enriched my life. My prayer is that I have done the same for someone else. I hope you love the ride as much as I do. Thank you for being with me.
So, this post started out as a list of some of my favorite places to shop. Then as I was literally writing out a draft of that post, I received two emails that changed my direction. One was from someone who wanted to know where I shop at, and the other was from someone who said they were going on vacation and wanted to know what I think they should take.
That got me reminiscing about the days, when I would go into the store, and look for my size and buy it. No matter if I liked it or not. It was my size ( size 20) and fit reasonably well (actually too big), so it came home with me. How pathetic was I?
I know this is the plight of so many plus size women! I hear it all the time. Especially young plus size women. It’s as if there’s no in between, there’s overly sexual ( a whole other post right here) and then there’s frumpy! Well later for all that!
Fast forward to today, ( size 22-24) I love shopping straight size trends and look for classic pieces to keep my wardrobe ever fresh!
Now, I can do outfit of the day posts all day long, and I still get the same question. Where did I get this or that? I want to make this as easy as possible. Below I’ve highlighted some of my favorite straight size 2016 Spring Trends, and listed the stores where you can pick them up.
Cold Shoulder: This is definitely a more feminine trend that looks great on plus sized women. The bare shoulders draws the eye up to your beauty.
Florals: You’ll see this one in small and large prints, appliques, and even combined with other trends. After all Spring Showers Bring May Flowers!
Ruffles: So, I’ve seen some articles describe this trend as “Spanish” however, be careful where you choose to display the ruffles they could add unwanted volume if the are sitting on the wrong curve!
Lace: Most recently, Beyoncé strutted a white lace number at the White House Easter Egg Roll. Yes just like that, all the lace pencil skirts went up! Lol. You see lace on skirts, dresses, shirts as the main fabric or as accents.
Stripes: Yeah, so that ” Big Girls Can’t Wear Stripes” not today! We are blurring the lines and rocking vertical, horizontal, and even diagonal stripes!
Romance: This one has the potential to be dangerous! It’s uber sexy and sometimes called “Daytime Lingerie”. I think you get the picture. Satin, sheers, laces, nets, but it can all be done in good taste. So let’s keep the raunchy out of romance ok.
Denim: This is one of those ever fresh categories. Like when was jeans ever not a trend?
Tulle: Yup, it’s still in! Yay! I love tulle skirts, you can dress them up with heels and a nice blouse, or down with Jean shirts. They go with sandals, sneakers,t-shirts and they fit great on everybody’s body. You can’t mess the look up!
Where I shop in store or online:
Fashion To Figure- mostly online but there are stores in Jersey. The clothes fit true to size and they always have sales.
Tip: Sign up for the email lists, I shop when they have discounts via email.
Burlington- In store, I have one close to my house and one close to my job. So, I’m always checking the racks.
Tip: If you like it, get it right then, because chances are it’ll be gone quick.
Eloquii- Only online. The clothes are a great quality for the price! These pieces last through washing and wearing and they are very fashion forward.
Tip: Same as above, I shop when they have deals and coupons via email.
Asos Curve- Online Only, again the clothes are great quality the sizes are true to size.
Tip: Make sure you by US sizes they not UK sizes. I know a few people that made this mistake.
Torrid- Both instore and online. They absolutely have the best fitting jeans! They always have sales and they have the loyalty rewards for being an insider.
Tip: Use your insider points, and buy ” staple” pieces, because the prices are not cheap.
Ashley Stewart- For years this was the only place I shopped but as of late ehh! It’s still a great resource, but things have changed.
Rebdolls- Online only, I love them but you have to get the extended sizes fast because they sell out quickly! A lot of these pieces are a little young for me. But they are great for the plus sized millennial woman.
Lane Bryant- In store just because it’s close to my house. Sometimes the prices take me down though! I try not to shop in a rush, but if there is ever a last minute need, I go there.
Full Beauty.com- Online only,You can usually find any and everything on this site! That’s their whole niche. Wide shoes, classic trends and the new in thing ” Swimsuits For All”; you name it they have it!
Do you have a favorite store? Drop it in the comments below!
Have you ever heard the saying, “imitation is the sincerest form of flattery” ? Well, there’s another side to this coin. Duplication is the surest way to fail. In this era of social media we are constantly bombarded with images, ads, and words that tailor our thinking one way or another. Although we have begun to tout this mantra of self-love and body acceptance, it’s no secret that everyone wants to be like someone. It’s human nature to imitate and implement the things we love about someone or something else in our own life.
In fact as followers of Christ we are charged to live a life that can be imitated by others. We are to be Christlike as Christ imitates The Father to be Godlike. The bible says, “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” Matthew ??chapter and verse
The real danger comes from trying to duplicate others actions, looks and or life.
“Why Be A Copy When You Were Born Original” by Oscar Wilde
Follow me now, this relationship with trying duplicate others is a slippery slope.
For one, it’s not authentic and you will not be able to keep it up.
For two, when you can no longer keep up the charade it will cause feelings of defeat.
For three, people can tell when you are not real.
Now I’m not saying that we shouldn’t look to others for inspiration, but we need to apply these thing to our life as it fits us. I believe we need examples of how to be, as well examples of how not to be!
I remember the older women always saying
“ Take It Home and Make It Look Like You”.
In this picture I was inspired by ChiChi from Supple Chic. I could have gone out and had a skirt like hers made or tried to buy one, but instead I went to my closet and found this plaid pencil skirt that I got from Torrid. In fact the cut of that skirt may have been a little easier on my mid section lol.
At 5’3 and well over what is considered an acceptable weight, it’s no question that I have to be creative when dressing my body. My legs and hips are one of those features that I love about my body, so for me pencil skirts give me the curvy longer look that I prefer. I choose to wear my shirt on the outside because, to me it looks and feels better on the area (tummy time) that I don’t care for.
So, do look to others for inspiration. Do not try to duplicate them. While they say “For every one idea you have, three other people have it at the same time” but nobody has your version of it!
Remmber be the best you that you can be! Because everyone else is taken!
Can you believe the real winter has rolled up on us with the quickness? Just a few weeks ago we were wearing shorts for Christmas! Now this cold air has my lips tight like I’ve been baptized in lemon juice! And I’m a kisser so this is no bueno! After shoveling out from Snowmagedon this past weekend my lips were super dry! I have been moisturizing them but this is only a temporary fix. I decided to do some lips service and exfoliate my lips. So, I head to the pantry and whip up DIY Lip Scrub.
Mix all the ingredients together, it should be thick like a paste. Apply a generous amount to your lips and rub them with your fingers, or you can just rub your lips together.
The best thing is you don’t have to worry about getting it in your mouth because all of these items are edible. Wipe off excess with a wet towel or rag. You can repeat until you feel the dry skin has sloughed off. The balance will keep in the refrigerator in a covered container for about 2 weeks.
Be sure to moisturize your lips right after you complete the process.
The winter tends to dry out my skin and hair to the extreme. What about you? Do you have a specific wintering beauty routine? If so we’d love to hear it. Please tell us what you think. Well until next time keep your lips kissable and soft. Muwah
I’m sure it’s no secret that being a stylish plus sized woman is not cheap. It seems that paying more just goes with the territory. It’s even worse for me because I shop with my ears. If you can imagine I’m just walking through a particular store and I start hearing things speaking to me. “Psst hey over here” ” take me home with you”. Sometimes trying it on will help me make the decision to buy or not to buy, and other times it’s so right for me that I just have to get it. I usually set a limit per piece of what I will spend. Such as I don’t want to spend $39.00 for a t-shirt! Yeah that’s just crazy-town!
Now, when that piece that’s calling out to me has a markdown price, there’s almost nothing that’s going to keep me from owning it! That’s what happened with this Glam Rock look. The entire look was only $25 at Burlington Coat Factory! The vest and the top are size 2x and the bottoms are 3x. This particular store has a decent plus size section. I shop both Women’s and Junior’s. The fur vest was the most expensive (if I can even use that word) it was $14.99. I love these faux leather leggings ( yes I wear leggings, and I look great in them) they were a steal at $4.99 and the top was $5.99. That’s like getting a whole outfit for the price of my favorite jeans at 50% off. **tilts head and winks eye**. Well, what can I say, somethings are just worth the price.
Fashion can be frugal, and even plus sized fashion can be affordable and stylish. Now one word of caution when you find these low low prices you have to try them on. Very often there could be some fit issues. I always make sure the bottom of my shirts hits around the middle of my hips. That way it’s probably low enough in the back to cover some booty, and long enough in the front to cover my lower belly. The waist on bottoms is always my concern, sometimes it’s cut small but the legs fit great. That’s what works for me, but if you feel great in it, by all means get your Glam Rock on.

From April showers to May flowers, Spring is upon us! Although it may not feel like it yet, before you know it we will be dawning much less coverings. Shorter skirts, lighter jackets, and much more skin on display. That being said here are some of our favorite Spring 2015 Fashion Trends to make you look Phat and Fab with no fuss! Who has time for the fuss, not us!
This being the month of showers it’s no wonder the Rain Coat is in style, I myself love a double breasted Trench with a great umbrella. Or you may like this Isabelo Taledo Ruffle Hem Trench from Lane Bryant. We will be in and out of the showers no need to look like a rubber ducky.
Speaking of rubber duckys, Yellow will be on trend if you choose to sport a yellow rain coat or trench.
Floral and Gingham are the prints to be seen in! I know what you’re thinking “Grandma Gear”. Well think again these are not your grandmothers patterns here, we are seeing bold floral prints and gingham in skirts, bags dress, coats, and all the like this spring.
In fact I scored a floral clutch from one of the second hand stores in my area for little or nothing. So if you’re a little pattern shy just put it in the bag. Check out this gingham pencil skirt from Torrid. I love it! And it fits like a glove.
Prints period will be in! I saw a quote from Steffy Fullstyle on her guest blog post for igigstyle, which said “you should choose the print based on the size of your facial features. If you have big features do big prints, and if you have small features choose a smaller print.” Hmmmm I didn’t know that. So whether you choose floral, check, gingham or polka dots, you’ll be rocking it your way and that’s always the best option!
Boho Chic will be blasting in from the past, I love this trend! You know why right? Need I say effortless! No fuss just fab! I love the Kimonos, The Pendant Necklaces, and the Fringe. This trend has Saddle shaped bags and yes the platform shoe is back. So get Hipppie to it! See what I did right there, you get it Boho is the modern Hippie . * cracking up*
One trend that I am not so fond of for obvious reasons to those who know me is Head to Toe White. Yeah I might try it, but I doubt I it will make it into rotation unless I buy a lot of white. I admire people who wear white, but it’s just not for me. Oh and yes big girls look delicious in white! Like a big old glass of ice cold milk in the morning! Lol!
Don’t for get to add a little sparkle with your statement earrings, chokers, and very femme handbags. I am not a belt wearer but I may try one of those Obi belts.
I’m all about adding to what you already have, I’m not one of those girls that buy a whole new wardrobe every season. So add a few pieces and call it peace! If you choose wisely you can bring these pieces out year after year. Or better yet sell them or give them away and make a coin or two for new pieces. The jeans are still skinny and distressed, as pictured here by Kim of Naturally Fashionable, so you can still rock last year’s jeans and look great. I love a flat shoe and we saw a lot of flats on the runway, thank God! Sneakers for some have never left but they will be more popular with the continuing sporty trend. Tule skirts and Shirt Dresses are still here!
Remember confidence is always the best accessory, so put on your best you and it will always WERK!

Was this not one of the best summers that we’ve had in a long time? I know it has been for me, but atlas, we bid adieu to summer.
So we have officially entered the Fall of 2014. It seems that we have been seeing articles and posts about it for the last 6 weeks. And wouldn’t you know it, here’s another one. As we bring the first week of autumn to a close I thought it fitting to get a look at the fall favs from New York Fashion week.
Get the most out of your wardrobe by adding a few pieces to update your existing items. If you read my post on Playing Fall Keeps you will see how to transition your summer looks into fall. I noted some wardrobe basics that will help you stretch your looks.
So you got your basics, you have your transition tips, now what?
In this post I’ll give you the newest trends so you can Fall With Style. According to all those in the know, these are the items colors and themes you want to add to your stash.
“Fall Goes Pop” To quote Monif C. Pop of color that is. The colors for this season are as rich and deep as I aspire to be, lol. They have fluid names like merlots, cognac and sangria. Royal and cobalt blues replace the basic navy blue. Don’t be afraid to wear colors on your bottom either. For so long we have conditioned ourselves to wear black or dark bottoms. I say give it a shot of life. Wear the sangria pants or the cobalt capris, heck I know for myself I love a printed bottom.
The Bold and the Beautiful– Be bold wear prints and patterns, they are very much the look. I even have a pair of black and white striped pants in heavy rotation. They feel good and after I got the first 5 compliments, I knew this was a look that was working for me. Whether you wear stripes or abstract prints, small or bold prints that is up to you.
Don’t Be Mad Wear Plaid– I know what you’re thinking Lumber Jack right. That’s cool, but there are so many plaids, such as this Eloquii Tartan plaid coat, or Lane Byant plaid cape coat. DSW has a pair of smallprint plaid Madden Girl Zumba booties that are so cute.
Put Your Cape on Your Back and Be Super Bad- Capes and more capes, cape coats, shawls and all. This look appears very regal to me. There are capes on every level. We see cape coats from Lane Bryant to a vintage cape worn by Dionne Dean.
Knits Together- I’m not talking just your basic chunky sweater, I’m talking full on knitted sweater suits. Head to Toe knits. Sweater leggings, sweater dresses, and sweater skirts.
Shine Bright Like a Diamond– Shinny metallics such as steel and aluminum grey are seen in all aspects of apparel. Of course shinny stones and studs are also accessorizing everything from clutches to jean jackets and pants.
Fur You and Me- Faux fur is seen in capes, shawls, and vests. I love my white faux fur vest from Rachel Zoe. Gabifresh rocked her fur as a faux fur stole, it reminds me of that old Hollywood glam of the 50’s and 60’s.
Let’s get Sporty- Not just your jersey from your favorite sports team, but there are very fashionable tops and pants that are sporty and sexy. The jogger leggings are what you will see a lot of. Tinkas Closet has a “Dreamer” Sweat shirt, I love it, but it doesn’t look like something you want to sweat in. So your getting sporty but it still sexy.
Leather It Up– Leather pants, jackets dress, even leather accessories are in. Some are just leather accents such as a leather collar or fringe on a garment. You are going to see more and more leather dresses, skirts and of course jackets.
Hello Moto- Motorcycle jackets are my favorite trend of this season so far. For the most part they are flattering to all figures, and you can get them in varying styles to fit almost every occasion. I know they can be a bit pricey, but your just have to be on the lookout for good prices. I got an off white one around June from Lane Bryant for less than twenty dollars. It was 80% off! On the other hand I bought a black one from Burlington Coat Factory that cost over one hundred dollars. So in other words you gotta watch and grab. LOL!
It’s all in the Jeans– The jeans that make the cut this season are ripped and they are either skinnies or boyfriend. I myself love the skinnies. I love to be able to feel my jeans on me, and preferably I like them to have a little stretch so they hug the curves. Although the colors vary, they are mostly distressed. I get most of my jeans from Burlington. My plan is to hit the thrift store and find a reasonably inexpensive pair of well-fitting jeans and beat them up. If this works I will definitely be posting about it!
Lastly keep your eyes appeal for satins, velvets, and chunky knit scarves. Purses are clutches or large doctor bags with unique accents. The Jewelry is black, and they shoes are going pointed.
I know it seems like a lot of information, and maybe you can’t figure out how to make it work for your style.Just know Everything is not for everybody, as my Daddy used to say what ever you find take it home and make it look like you!
