101 Natural Hair Tips: 10 Tips For Healthy Color Treated Hair 61-70

To begin with, there is always this debate of is color treated hair still natural? In my book it is, although the color may affect the texture. But still to me, adding color is just part of the variety in the natural hair community.

Now there are many ways to color your natural hair. For the sake of this post, let’s assume you saw your favorite influencer and she posted what color she uses on her hair and you ran to the store and snatched it up! Hey it happens just like that most times. Anyway you colored your hair,  now what?

1. Start With Healthy Trimmed Hair: You want to start with your hair in its best condition possible to limit damage and increase your chances of getting your color the correct shade.

2. Limit Direct Heat: The direct heat from hand dryers and straightening tools increase dryness. Instead opt for over head dryers and no heat styling methods.

3. Use Products For Color Treated Hair: Preferably you want to use products made by the same brand as the hair color you are using. Now that your hair is color treated, you have specific needs to care for your hair in this state and its best to use products made for the state of your hair.

4. Look For Products With Water Soluble silicone : I know, I know, everyone says don’t use silicones! However the color will strip your hair of its natural moisture, so you need the good silicones to help coat and protect the hair. Some good choices are Amo- silicones which help with moisture, and are water soluble so they don’t cause build up on the hair shaft. Look for them in your conditioner and leave-ins.

5. Use A Daily Leave-In Conditioner: So I am a self admitted leave-in lover! If you don’t use a leave-in for daily maintenance  you should! Using a daily leave-in will help maintain moisture, and decrease brittleness that can occur with color treated hair.

6. Use Sulfate Free Shampoos and Conditioners: Now this is a must. The sulfates will dry your hair out. And we know, dry hair breaks! We do not want breakage !

7. Deep Condition Often: Now this is just a healthy hair practice period. But it’s extra important to deep condition when you have color treated hair. You want to add extra moisture and layers of nutrients every chance you get.

8. Do Hot Oil Treatments: The end game here is to protect the hair and avoid dryness. The hot oil treatment, or even the oil in your LOC Method, or just by running oil through your hair as you style will help to seal in the moisture and protect your hair. Not to mention it will add a little shine to your tresses.

9. Limit Manipulation Of Dry Hair: if your hair is not properly cared for it can become extremely dry. You never want to manipulate the hair in this state. It will break off right in the comb, brush or even your hand. To avoid breakage you always want to add some oil or water or both before trying to style, comb, or perform any manipulations on your hair.

10. If You Start To Experience Server Dryness, Breakage, or Brittleness Consult A Professional: This probably doesn’t need to be said, but just in case. If you can not maintain your color treated hair and you begin to see breakage or dryness and brittleness which will lead to breakage, please make a hair appointment with a licensed cosmetologist! Now I’m not going to say that all cosmetologist are great, but chances are you’ll fare better with an experienced professional than you will on your own.

101 Natural Hair Tips: Transitioning To Natural 41-50

So, unless you have never used chemicals on your hair, there are only two ways to return to natural. Or as we say “Go Natural”. Which way you choose is a personal preference. Either you Transition, which means you allow your hair to begin to grow in and not chemically treat it (relax) anymore. Or you BC or Big Chop, this means just what it sounds like. You chop off your hair down to the un-relaxed portion.  In my opinion one takes a lot more courage and is more drastic than the other, but one takes more skill than the other. I must say, as extreme as my personality is in some cases, I personally chose the less drastic approach of transitioning.  I just didn’t want to be bald! Although I sometimes use to cut my relaxed hair very short, TBH I just wasn’t ready for short and natural at the same time! **sidebar** Oh but I am loving these tapered cuts that I see on the Gram these days these days!

Anyway, I am going to break this post down into “Do’s and Don’t’s”. As I said, I personally transitioned and did a series of mini chops until I was fully natural. I can tell you this was not as easy as it sounds. There were some hard lessons learn and some habits and behaviors that I had to undo after many years of practice. So let’s get into it:

  1. Do comb the hair from tip to root. Having relaxed hair for so long, I was just use to combing from root to tip. When transitioning and also when fully natural this is a definite no no. Combing from tip to root allows for gentler detangling and  much less pulling. Use a wide tooth comb,and do not comb your hair when it’s dry.101 Natural Hair Tips : Transitioning To Natural
  2. Do coddle the line of demarcation. This is the absolute weakest point of your hair! It is the point where the relaxed hair meets the natural hair. Rough combing, pulling, dryness, or just about anything stress, will cause your hair to snap off right at this point.
  3. Do Learn to treat all of your hair as if it’s all natural. Even when you have more relaxed than natural. In general this is just a good idea to get use to taking care of your natural hair.
  4. Do not use heat to make both textures appear to be the same. This kind of defeats the purpose of having natural hair. I’m just saying, if your are going to burn it out before it even grows, why go natural at all.   5. Do use products for natural hair only. Practice reading the labels at this stage, so you know what your hair likes and what it doesn’t. The reason I say this is because in most cases, the products for natural hair are less harsh. They will work just fine on the relaxed hair. They will nurture your natural hair as well as treat the relaxed hair.
  6.  Do not compare your hair to the “experts”. This was a hard lesson learned. I was watching so many YouTubers and expecting to get those results. But honestly, my hair wasn’t like theirs, I didn’t have the edits, lighting and do overs like them either. Although a valuable resource, they are not to be compared to. It’s like going doing Karaoke, just because you know the words, you are not going to sound like Beyonce’!
  7. Do not hold on to damaged or thinning hair. Just cut it. You will thank me later. Holding on the those thin ends it very counter productive. you want to have healthy hair right? So, you have to depart from the idea that longer is better. Even if you don’t have damage, you should still trim it often. Healthy and fuller is better!
  8. Do not depart from your good hair practices. Make sure your wrap your hair at night, and wash it regularly. If you normally go to the hair salon to get your hair done, make sure you find a hair dresser to do the same for your natural hair.   9. Do not obsess over your curl pattern. We are all different, and we all have different unique traits and features that make us truly beautiful. In most cases people with thick hair wish it was thinner and people with thinner hair wish it was thicker. When I went natural it was at the height of the hair typing debate. So many people were obsessed with what hair type you had. This was hard for me because I have about 3 different textures in my head. We just have to be happy with what we have and learn to love ourselves the way God made us.
  10. Do not try to find ways to rush the process. Have patience! If you don’t have the skill, or your attention has not caught up to your intention, just find you a protective style and ease into it.Trying to rush the process will only lead to a feeling of defeat or a change of direction and you’ll just get out of the journey and relax again. Believe you me, I know plenty of women who do this over and over. They get 3, 6, or 8 months into the transition and decide, they can’t take it any more and give up on the process only to come back to it months later wishing they had just stuck it out.

Number 10 is one of the most important tips I can give. As with any transition it takes time. Learn to enjoy the process! Have that cake and eat it too!

101 Natural Hair Tips: Winter Hair Care Tips 31-40

Depending on where you live, the winter season can be a series of bone chilling cold days, mixed with blustering wintery storms, and freezing rain and snow! The harsh cold temps and freezing precipitation alone is enough to cause damage to your hair. The constant temperature changes from going in and out of the cold robs your hair of precious moisture. Add to that, the cold air is dryer and wearing hats to keep warm dries our hair out even more. It’s a wonder we aren’t completely bald by the time it warms up!

That being said keeping your hair healthy in the winter is no easy feat, but it is completely doable. Here are my top 10 Winter Hair Care tips to keep your hair healthy this winter:

31. Avoid Humectants. The nature of the humectants is to draw moisture from the air into the hair. That being said, the cold will freeze the water onto your hair causing it to break. This is the opposite of my normal routine. I love to add honey to my conditioners and I even have a “Honey Be Natural” hair care treatment.

32. Limit Wash and Go’s. Obviously if you live in a more tropical area you don’t have to worry as much, but just as the above, the water can freeze on your hair causing dryness and breakage.

33. Employ protective styling. Low manipulation styles limit the pulling, reducing the amount of hair loss, and decreasing the chances for breakage. For this reason many naturals use protective styling year round. Caution make sure your hair is clean and well moisturized, and don’t leave the style in too long.

 

34.  Keep your hair and scalp clean and free of build up. Now in my research I’ve seen all kinds of advice, limit washes, increase washes, use shampoo, don’t use shampoo, everyone has a different opinion! The bottom line is your hair and scalp need to be clean and free of debris and toxins the can cause dryness and breakage.

35. Use the LOC or LCO method daily. This will go along way to saving that coveted moisture and decreasing the chance for hair loss.

36. Replace your oils with heavier butters. Now adding butters that seal is the key. And if you add butter you definitely need to use shampoo. Co washing most likely will not cleanse your hair well enough.

37. Try a Black Tea or Coffee rinse to reduce shedding. I use the method about once a month, it also helps to add shine to the hair.

38. Wear a satin lined hat, or what I do is put a silk or satin scarf under my hat. This limits the friction and pulling from the knit or wool, and protects the hair from loosing moisture to the material of the hat.

39. Deep condition. I might add this to every post. Deep conditioning is an important aspect of every healthy hair regimen.

40. Eat a balanced diet and get exercise.  This is not easy in the winter. Hell it’s never easy but less so in the colder months. Cold weather and comfort food go hand in hand, and it’s just easier to go out and exercise when it’s warm. Make sure to get your water in. In the warmer months we tend to drink more water to cool off. So make sure you get your water in, and eat green veggies to feed are hair the nutrients it needs. Exercise increases your circulation and helps remove toxins in the body which feeds the hair.

101 Natural Hair Tips: Wash Day Hair Tips 21-30

First things first…confession time. As much as I love my hair, I am not a lover of the wash day tango! I’ve heard the argument.

” If you don’t love your washday, maybe you need to change your regemin”.

 

I think there may be some truth to that statement, but in my case I can’t agree. I’ve never liked washday, even when I was a kid. My hair has always been very thick and adding water is my kryptonite!  Unfortunately for me there is no way around it, to have hhealthy hair, you have to keep it cleansed. Since returning to natural I’ve found a few tips and tricks that help cut down on time and stress to my tresses. BT dubs, this is also post 3 in series of 10 billion on 101 Natural Hair Tips. 21. Detangle Hair before washing.

I’m sure you’ve heard this one before, but it’s the number one tip to reduce hair loss and cut down on wash time. Section the hair into as many sections as needed ( usually 4-6). Depending on how tangled my hair is I sometimes start with as many as eight and combine a few of them in larger chunky twists as I go along. Try added some conditioner and water to aide in the process. Use a clip to pin up the completed section.

22.Detangle using a wide tooth comb, detangling brush, or your fingers.

My fingers are my magic tool of choice. When using your fingers, you get to feel the hair as you are detagling. However I also love detangling combs and brushes. The wider the tooth the better. Make sure your comb or bush doesn’t have any missing or broken teeth. They could snag or pull on your hair and cause damage to your strands. I usually end up with 4 sections.

23. Start detangling from ends and work towards the root.

There is one very simple rule in place here. Don’t comb from the root to tip. By starting at the ends and working your way up the shaft it minimizes hair loss. The most effective technique that I have found is to add the conditioner, and finger detangle under running water.

24. Wash your hair in the sections

This simple step will avoid retangling your tresses. Apply the shampoo at the root and work towards the ends. Make sure to cleanse the scalp, by gently massaging the scalp with your finger tips. Then work the later down the twist to the ends. Avoid using a circular motion this can encourage tangles and clumping of the hair.

 

25. Use sulfate free shampoo, cowashs, or ACV rinses to cleanse your hair.

Now I’m not hear to agrue for or against either method. I’ve used all three and they all work. However, if you find that your normal products aren’t working you may need to do a clarifying shampoo. I do one every 2 or 3 months.

26. After shampooing spray hair with olive oil.

After shampooing but before conditioning, run some Olive oil through your hair. I find this helps with manageability and softness,especially between deep conditioning. Rinse all the shampoo out. Run some Olive oil through your hair. Work down the shaft, the rinse.

27. Apply conditioner with praying hands method.

I know it sound weird but just give it a try. It will decrease the opportunity for tangles, as well as coax the cuticle to lay flat. The cleaning process raises the cuticle, and now we need to make sure it starts the process of closing to lock in the moisture.

28. Deep condition with heat.

Adding heat helps to penetrate the hair shaft increasing the  effectivness of the product. If you don’t have a hooded dryer, use a plastic cap, or plastics bags and use your own body heat.

29. Be careful of protein overload.

Although protein is good for your hair, you don’t want to over do it. I’ve read if the label says “repair” wither its a DC or a leave in, it has protein in it. Too much protein will cause excessive drying and damage. It’s almost as bad as heat damage, which ironically protein prevents…but that’s for a future post.

30. Document The Process !

I can’t stress this enough. I can’t tell you how much impact this will have on increasing the amount of good hair days. It’s like cooking from a recipe verses cooking from memory. By keeping a simple hair journal of what products you used and how you used them, you’ll easily be able to figure out what works and what doesn’t.
