Best Products For Natural Hair : 5 GREAT STYLERS FOR KINKY HAIR

 

Hey Curlies, I always get a lot of questions about what products to use on natural hair. Or what did so and so use and why isn’t said product working for me? In this post I will highlight some of the best products for kinky hair and how to use them to get the best results. The photo above is an 8 day old twist out. As you might have guessed the curls were more defined day 1 and 2, but I like it so much better when it gets old. I do not have naturally curly hair, however with the right product and technique curl poppage is definitely attainable.

As far as technique goes. I use the L. C.O method most of the time on freshly washed hair. If you don’t know what the L.C.O method is. It’s a process of layering product on the hair to promote moisture retention. It means Leave-in, Cream (styler), and then Oil. You may have also heard it called L.O.C, this is the same process in a different sequence. I have two other post about my favorite Leave-ins, ( 5 favorite leave-ins) and my favorite oils, ( 5 favorite oils). I have found this is the best way to keep my natural hair healthy and moisturized. Wow so I guess this post is actually be a part 3 to a L.O.C series.

These are not in any particular order, as they are all my favorite and work well on kinky hair. They can all be found at your local big box store such as Target, and also at your local drugstore like CVS or Walgreen’s. Here are my favorite products for making my kinky hair soft and curly:

    • Eden Bodyworks Citrus Fusion Hydrate & Soothe Butter. This product is the over night celebrity staple. If you have a last minute event or date and don’t have time to do a full wash day. This baby right here will give you shinny soft hair that looks as good as freshly washed hair. I must confess I’ve actually never used this product on freshly washed hair. The first time I tried it was on a Friday night, to do a quick twist and rod on my bangs for an early morning meeting. I didn’t expect much, and boy was I pleasantly surprised. It smells amazing and it’s very thick as you can see. It’s called a butter but it’s definitely creamy. I had a nice soft hold with great definition.
EDEN BODYWORKS – CITRUS FUSION HYDRATE & SOOTHE BUTTER
  • Design Essentials Almond & Avocado Curling Creme.  This is one of my favorites for colder months. The Almond & Avocado are super moisturizing and smell great. I’ve gotten great results on twist outs, braid outs, and even to smooth my hair to do goddess twists. It can be used about every other day to re-twist as well. It leaves your hair very soft, and gives the curls a medium hold. Did I say it was extremely moisturizing?
DESIGN ESSENTIALS ALMOND & AVOCADO CURLING CREME
  • Curls Blue Berry Bliss Twist -N- Shout Cream & Curl Control Jelly. This one is as versatile as they come. This combo works for twist outs, braid outs, twists,and even wash n go’s. I’m not to fond of the smell, but it does work very well. It gives a firm hold that lasts for days, and no flaking. This one didn’t leave my hair as soft as the previous products, but the style lasted longer with very little maintenance. The curl control jelly is one of the best gels with all natural products. Both can be used alone, but work best for me as a combo.

  • Alikay Naturals Moisture Rich Hair Parfait. Now this one is actually not considered a styler, but i’s so moisturizing that it makes the hair very soft and pliable. Again this one is a great cold weather product. It’s 100% all natural, and the smell is divine. It smells good enough to eat! This is my go to for a beautiful fluffy braid out on dry hair. It keeps the hair soft and fluffy. If you are doing a protective style this will also keep your hair well moisturized for days.
ALIKAY NATURALS MOISTURE RICH HAIR PARFAIT
  • Maui Moisture Curl Quench Curl Milk. This is great for protective styling. It keeps the hair soft and manageable and reduces shedding when combing. I found this to be great for when I style my hair every 2 – 3 days. Let’s say I had jumbo twists or 2 cornrows, I would redo and moisturize with this product every few days. It’s not too heavy and is great for summer and fall. It has some great products such as papaya butter which I have never used. It is a hair milk and my hair loves hair milks.

101 Natural Hair Tips: Hair Porosity Tips 91- 101

Well as we come to the end of this series, 101 Natural Hair Tips, it was tough for me to settle on the last topic. Then I realized, I’m always talking about how knowing your hair porosity is the most important aspect of a healthy hair journey, yet I never told you why I feel this way. Or how this could help. So it was kind of no brainer. The Last topic is Hair Porosity.

Knowing your hair porosity literally determines what products will work best for your hair. What processes will give you the best results, and why certain buzz words and holy grail products will or won’t work for you.

  1. Know Your Hair Porosity- Here are the two most common ways to determine hair porosity. Take a strand of hair and hold it between your fingers. Run your pinched fingers down the shaft. If it feels tight & stiff you have low porosity hair, which means your hair shaft is tightly closed and it is difficult for moisture to get in or out. If you feel ridges or jagged peaks you have high porosity hair, which means the shaft is open and it is easy for moisture to escape. If your fingers move smoothly up and down the shaft you have normal porosity hair. which means you can accept and retain moisture easily. The most commonly promoted way is the water test. Take a glass of water drop a strand of hair in the glass. If the strand sinks to the bottom rapidly, you have high porosity. If the stand slowly floats to the middle of the glass, you have normal porosity. If the strand floats at the top and does not sink, you have low porosity.
  2. Test On Clean Hair- It’s important to test on clean hair. The product on you hair can obscure the results. Your hair may float at the top because you have certain product or oils on your hair that seal in the and stop the water from penetrating the shaft.
  3. Test Different Areas Of The Head- Believe it or not you could have more than one porosity level on your head. Just as you can have different hair textures. The best places to test are the crown, the nape, and the temple. Although I would not recommend using several products on your head. I would suggest you utilize a process that will assist in moisture retention for that specified section.

Lets say you find out the hair at the crown of your head is high porosity but the rest of your hair is normal porosity. Here are the tips I would suggest you use for that section of hair.

  1. Rinse High Porosity Hair Cold Water- The cuticle on high porosity hair is lifted. The cold water will coax the hair cuticle closed. This will seal in the moisture. Also using cold leave-in for your  L.O.C.
  2.  Aloe Vera Juice- Adding aloe vera juice to your wash day will help seal the moisture in. Aloe vera juice can also be added to your daily maintenance routine.  Add it in your water bottle.
  3. High Porosity Hair Benefits From Protein –  Protein is in your deep conditioner. It’s in your leave in. You can do protein treatments.

On the other hand, if you find that your nape or temple area is low porosity and the rest of your hair is normal. Here are some tips that will help you get the best results.

  1.  Low Porosity Hair Benefits From Steam- The steam will open the cuticle to allow the moisture to penetrate the hair shaft. If you don’t have a steamer, bring water to a boil and hold a towel over your head while leaning over the pot as the steam evaporates. You can also sit your leave in and or your oil in hot water to heat the product.Using heat when deep conditioning will also help the product penetrate the hair shaft.
  2.  Avoid Product Build Up- Low porosity hair is prone to product build up, because the hair cuticle is closed, the product will sit on the hair and not penetrate the shaft. If the product  builds up on the shaft it will give the hair a dull appearance. Apple Cider Vinegar rinses will cleanse the hair from build  up.
  3. Limit Protein- It may be hard to avoid protein completely, but you need to limit the protein. Stay away from protein masks, and look for deep conditioners with out protein. Do not add protein to your regimen.

Now, this last tip is one of the most important tips on the whole natural hair journey. There will always be buzz words, or some miracle product, or the latest greatest find. They always say the journey is trial and error, but this can lead to curl damage, or worst yet breakage.

  1. Stick To What Works- Stay off the bandwagon. I remember a few years back, coconut oil was the holy grail of the natural hair community. But for me I tried it once or twice and knew it wasn’t going to work for my hair. I listen to my hair, if my hair doesn’t respond well to the product, I leave it alone.

I have covered the most important points about hair porosity and how it applies to a healthy hair journey. Now there are always factors that will affect your hair porosity and condition, such as hair color,(color treated hair tips) medicine, and or illness. These factor will affect the results of your test, but these tips will help to repair any temporary damage that may occur.

Is it just me or doesnt it seem like every other day there’s a new “it” ingredient for natural hair? Every time I turn around there’s some super ingredient that’s going to grow your hair, thicken it, or add super duper shine and moisture! It’s no wonder many Curlies find it difficult to navigate what to do and what not to do. But what if I told you, you already have all the super ingredients you need and probably use them everyday?

Have you ever heard of the term “Kitchen Beautician”? Well, this post is going to give new meaning the word! The products are literally from your kitchen! To top it off, if you love a great deal, you know the kind of deal that your money is so well spent that the dollars wink at you when you pass them off, than you’ll thank me later. There’s nothing better than things that double and triple your money! We have so many amazing deals right in the kitchen! Here are five items that are beneficial to your body inside and out, from head to toe, while stretching those coins!

  • Water- The Real Youth Elixir 

We can’t talk about water enough! It is truly a gift from God! Water is the only element in the world that is crucial to your well being. Besides helping your body perform to the best of its capability, drinking water promotes hair growth and glowing skin. Water is also the best moisturizer for dry hair, skin, and lips ( here is a recipe for DIY lip scrub just for you, as an added bonus!). And also usually the main ingredient in your favorite product or meal! Some people use rose water, rice water or alkaline water. All that that aside. Regular water works the best! In fact it’s one of our pillars for healthy hair.

  • Oils- What A Blessing 

As you know we are big oil lovers here (click her for : blessed oil). Oils are the NEXT best thing to a moisturizer ! You can use oils to lubricant your hair and also to seal in the goodness from other products and or lock the water onto your hair and skin. Using oils to cook with (i.e olive, coconut, and almond oils) are the best way to cut the fats. Use your favorite oil instead of butter and/or vegetable oils.   • Honey-Oh Honey Baby 

Heaven’s nectar! Honey is a natural humectant and draws in the moisture in the air to your hair when you use a honey mask (click her for : honey b natural hair mask). Honey is also a natural sweetener and you can replace your sugars with honey (even syrup and jelly too!) Honey also soothes your sore throat and boosts your immune system when down.

Here’s two added bonuses – a teaspoon a day of honey from your local farmers market will help you out during allergy season. And drinking warm water with honey and lemon in the morning on an empty stomach relaxes your stomach before a meal and promotes weight loss since it is a natural diuretic!   • Avocado-The Fruit of the Century!

I always hear Curlies complaining about the ingredients in the products they buy, but in the same breath, you dare not use DIY products. That part I just don’t get. But the truth is, the only way to be absolutely sure the products you are using are all natural is…if you use them in their natural state! And as you can see it’s easy to stretch your dollar! The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly: The Good Hair Post

Can we talk about good hair and bad hair ? What is good hair anyway? What is bad hair? I know some of you all will read that and answer “no hair is bad”! So, if there is no such thing as bad or ugly hair, why do we say “so and so” has pretty hair? What are we comparing this pretty hair too?

Most people of color refer to thinner hair with loose curls and/or waves to be considered pretty or good hair. Majority of the time, this statement is considered a compliment. But is it really?

All hair texture is different, but when we say that a certain curly has beautiful hair, what are we saying about that the next curly girl with a tighter curl pattern and/or coarser hair? Can she not have pretty hair? Are we underhandedly insulting our sista?

I’ve heard it all, and most women have a love hate relationship with their hair. Its either too kinky, too thin, too thick, too curly, too straight, too flat, too big, etc.
Yet, we always work it out and end up with a hand full of compliments.

Our community tends to segregate hair textures with certain curls being the “best” and other curls feeling isolated. When are we going to realize we are all in this together. The natural hair community is just as segregated as all the rest. We want to accept one form of natural hair, as if you can’t accept it all.

This journey back to loving our natural hair is not an easy one for a lot of us. It starts with self acceptance. It may seem easy on social media or for your favorite blogger, but the hardest battle is fighting yourself. You almost have to go back retrain your thoughts on everything you have learned when it came to hair care. Most of us were never taught to care for our hair. Even worse we don’t know how to love our hair. If your experience was anything like mine, your hair was always someone’s “problem issue”. What are we going to do with her hair? Who’s going to do her hair? Or if you wash it,I’ll do it? ….it was always a struggle so of course I adopted by that same struggle narrative.

I’ve said before, it wasn’t until I was faced with the prospect of loosing my hair, due to a chronic illness, that I began to fall in love with my hair like never before! I learned to listen to her in all her beautiful mane- nificent glory!

I’ll admit it before the world, I love my hair! I love hair period. I’m a hair person! Always have been! I literally see a persons hair before I see them. *don’t judge me* it could be worst. *smiles*

So, when you see that sista girl rocking her fro as you stare with a tinge of hair envy, pay her a compliment because you recognize her struggle. Recognize her efforts!

This natural hair movement is so huge, that it makes everyone uncomfortable, including yourself. You still struggle with taming your hair, for fear that you will stand out in corporate America, or even get kicked out of school for looking “unkept”. You have to learn to roll and twist your hair just good enough so that you can still please the eyes of others. As a natural you are not allowed to have a bad hair day, as if you ever had 100% perfect hair days before returning back to your natural state.

What’s funnier, the people who surround you tend to be more nervous about your natural hair journey than you are. This hair movement is scary, yet exciting, but still surprising, because everyday you never know what you will end up with (lol). Sometimes we set expectations too high and some days it’s overly frustrating. We all need the support of our hair community.

No one thinks of the struggle when you transition or chop your hair off. You amaze yourself when you realize you have no idea, how to take care of your own hair the way it is without any chemicals or heat. I know it isn’t easy for any woman to maintain the perfect hair, so we praise a good protective style, but in the end you still need to know how to maintain healthy hair. Our minds have been so conditioned with pretty hair vs ugly hair, that we fail to see the beauty in all our natural hair. Your natural curls may not match my natural curls, and my curls may not match the straight hair of the model on the latest magazine, but having hair, that we are able to grow without too much struggle is beautiful itself.

I’m sure we all have heard “natural hair isn’t for everyone”, but when you think about it, how is your hair that God gave you not for you, because it isn’t what the world may consider beautiful?

So, again next time you see someone with that “pretty hair”, that hair that she struggled to comb, failed to moisturize the night before, woke up frustrated and hoping she could tame it enough to be accepted, just know she might not see pretty hair, I know it’s beautiful and she should too.

. Let’s do away with this ugly hair stereotype. Let go of these turns like good and bad hair! What ever your hair texture what ever your hair type, what ever your hair style, love it, rock it, and make it your own! And as the old kitchen beauticians you to say after they got finished lacing you with the piff ” more hair” !

Product Review : The Mane Choice Heavenly Halo aka Hair Bae

“Say Halo Hydration” is their slogan and boy do I have to agree! I must admit I have been being very lazy with my hair lately. I have been wearing a wig for about 3 weeks, so my hair was thirsty! I went to the Circle of Sisters a few weeks back, I made sure to make my was over to The Mane Choice booth, they had some great sales going. I don’t remember the exact percentage off but I was able to get 4 products for $38. That’s about $25 off retail price. Well worth the money.

First off, it has an amazing smell. It’s kind of a floral fruity mix if that makes sense. I asked my husband what does he my hair smell like and he said candy :D. I’ll just say it smells very sweet and yummy. I’ll be reviewing the shampoo, the rinse conditioner, and the softening milk. The line has a pre-poo, a mask, and an oil serum, but I didn’t purchase them.

 

Say Halo Hydration

Shampoo-  I started off as usual applying the shampoo to my sectioned and detangled hair. The shampoo is very hydrating, it cleansed all the build up off the hair with out stripping it. I love sudsy bubbles and this lathers great. The test for me was when I was able to run my fingers through my hair with just the shampoo in it. It has so much slip that you can actually comb the shampoo through your hair! Need I say it rinses clean and you can feel the softness immediately!  For more on wash day basics click here. Rinse Out Conditioner -By the time I got finished playing in the shampoo, my hair was no longer in the sections I used to wash my hair. Somehow I knew this wouldn’t be a problem. I just split it down the middle and applied the rinse out conditioner to the two sections. The conditioner is very thick and of course it has great slip! I just ran it through my hair and let it sit for about 2-3 minutes per side and rinsed it out. Then I wrapped my hair in  my t shirt rag as usual. Softening Milk- After allowing my hair to dry a little in the t shirt, I proceeded with my normal routine using the L.O.C. As I said I didn’t buy the serum, so I just used a mix of some of my favorite oils. The softening milk is a essentially the Leave In. As a self professed Leave In Lover I’m always on the look out for products that make my daily styling easier. This is the only product that I didn’t have a rave over. It was just okay. I wore my hair in a flat twist style. It was soft and hydrated but it was a little too soft. I’m used to taking my flat twists out and having some definition, but I did not have any. It was more like a fluffy fro.

The label reads Herbal Hair Tonic & Soy Milk. My hair responds well to hair milks so I was sure this would work just fine. I’ve only ever used The Mane choice once and that was their straight hair serum. Some of the signature ingredients are Umutanga Oil, (made from a root native to Rwanda) which is know for it’s anti-aging properties. Palmarosa Oil (made from an Indian grass), its benefits are similar to more commonly know Tea Tree Oil, or Lemongrass such as antibacterial, antiviral, but it has a lighter rosy scent.  The Yashtimandhu Root (an Indian Licorice) it has anti inflammatory, and anti allergy uses. Yucca Root which is high in vitamins a, b, and c it’s also frequently used in natural shampoos to help make suds. Burdock Root Oil, ( A Eurasian herb from the Sunflower family) it’s now to promote hair growth and has antioxidant properties.

Now that we’ve gotten all that straight, I must say one of the best things is that it’s available at your local Target! I love when good products are also so accessible. Know The Edge- How I Got Over Thining Edges

Girl, I lost my edges! Well not all, but my hair was really thinning out, like most women of color, I pride myself on laid edges and a good ponytail. But if those edges thin out, that ponytail ain’t so laid. I’d come to face these two identical thinning spots on both sides of my head, as a sign of the times. By times, I mean getting older. So, I tried to work around this now problematic area, I wore less ponytails, and when wearing a ponytail, I ensured it was not pulled too tightly or too low. But this wasn’t enough! I was losing strands and it was too noticeable to me!

I do not wear many protective styles, (not that I am against them), so besides a ponytail, my hair is never pulled tightly. I am a very proud LAZY natural, meaning, I typically do the least amount of work to take care of natural hair. My main goal is always healthy hair. I do not venture out and try a lot of different products, I know what works and usually stick with that, and if I try something new it’s usually in the same family. I stick to Leave in’s, oils, and cream. The LOC method guarantees healthy, hydrated hair.

But, recently some hair has begun sprouting in those thin spots! *Praise break*! So, I looked back over the past three years and I noticed a trend, I was STRESSED and it showed in my hair. In my last post, I discussed my bout of mild depression, and how I began to feel better with exercise. But, I had no clue the toll my hair would pay. Never the less, I am glad that the fight isn’t over and I AM NOT LOSING MY HAIR! This transition into new hair on my edges inspired me to help you with struggle edges, if you ever find yourself in my shoes, whether it is from stress, tight protective styles, weight loss surgery, etc. I am here for you:

 

  1. Oil and Stimulation

I live by Olive Oil . It’s good for your hair and to eat! So, it’s a two for one special in my house, I purchase the biggest bottles usually from Costco. I always rub olive oil throughout my hair, but during these crucial times, I rub a good amount on my edges and give my scalp a gentle massage. Stimulation promotes growth by getting the blood circulation going! So, this should be a weekly practice all over your head.

  1. Limit stress

Tune out the noise. Life can be a whirlwind of emotions and sometimes that roller coaster takes us on a drop we never expected. But, we have the power to limit stressers. Avoid bringing your work life into your home space, meditate and pray, pick up yoga , write it out. Whatever works, but we must release that negative energy!

  1. Drink Water

I can not stress it enough how important it is to drink water. It’s great for your hair, skin, and health. God put it here for a reason, so I trust His judgement!

When wearing a protective style, your main concern should always be your hair health. Before styling, properly wash, condition, and LOC it up. If braiding, be sure to tell your stylist to make sure not to pull on your edges, nape or scalp too tightly. Also avoid tight or low ponytails

Of course, you should always take precaution when it comes to hair health, but remember what goes on in the inside will always affect the outside! Don’t let stress claim your edges or time! Keep it cute!

101 Natural Hair Tips: 81-90 Tips For Summertime Hair Care

I remember  facing my first summer with natural hair. The thought of sweaty, nappy, unruly hair was the vision I had! I was so used to having relaxed hair, I had no idea what I was going to do. Little did I know that summer was my hair’s best growth season. All I had to do was follow a few easy tips, and this lazy natural was on her way to an easy growth spurt!

Now over the years I’ve added a few more, but here are my Summertime hair care tips to maximize your growth season!

1. Clean Time In Between Time: Keeping your hair clean, and moisturized. This is my number one hair tip. Even if you don’t wash it every week, do a quick Cowash in between your wash sessions.

2. Get Down To The Root Of It: Your hair grows directly from your scalp, so it is important to keep your scalp clean and healthy and free from debris. A healthy scalp is probably one of the most underrated necessities for healthy and or long hair.

3. Let Go Of What’s Not Serving You: Get a fresh trim. Even if you only trim once a year, make it a summer trim. While your hair is growing you don’t want it to be stunted by those dead ends. They are useless!

4. Wet Your Whistle: Drink plenty of water! Very often the summer is dry and hot, so you want to make sure you drink plenty of water. By staying hydrated you are also giving your hair hydration.

5. Aloe There Honey: Use humectants to increase the moisture in your hair. I love natural humectants such as aloe Vera juice, and honey. You can add the aloe vera juice to your spray bottle and spritz your hair at night before bed. Or add some honey to your conditioner.  This will add softness and shine like you wouldn’t believe.

6. Soak & Seal: By soaking your hair with clear water and sealing with your favorite oil before swimming,  you limit the amount of chlorine or salt water that your hair will absorb. Even though this is a no brainer, I’m just gonna say it anyway wash and condition after swimming alright.

7. Keep It Moving: Get out and get some sun. Go for a walk, or go to a fair or carnival and walk around. The circulation will increase blood flow and encourage healthy hair growth.

8. Style With Ease: Employ protect styles, and easy pony tails and buns. The less pulling the better. If you’re ever going to try a wash n go, this is the time! Layer that product on and let it ride!

9. Don’t Be A Hot Head: It’s impossible to keep your hair healthy if you are burning it out. This means the sun too. If you are going to be out in the hot sun for prolonged periods, make sure you cover your head or use a protective product. Just as you have to protect your skin, your hair needs protection as well.

10. Embrace The Ohm! : This is so underrated! Let the easy breezy summer feel sink in! Enjoy the warm weather. Go to the movies, the music festival, hit as many street fairs as you can fit in. Believe you me, you tresses feel the stresses!

Hey Ladies, I started the 101 Natural Hair Tips series at the beginning of the year. I quickly churned out, Natural Hair Care Basics, Natural Hair Basics and then Wash Day Basics .  It was Winter, which is the harshest season on your tresses, so I gave you  Winter Hair Care Tips .

The Series was going well and the next three installments were reader requests to address specific issues. First we had Transitioning Tips, then How To Avoid Becoming A Product Junkie, and finally Tips For Color Treated Hair . After that I took a little break an did a few fashion posts. Fast Forward to the present, I’m back to finish up the series.

Spring is now upon us, and this is the perfect time to wear protective styles. In most cases your hair grows the best, and you retain more length in the warmer weather. That being said, here are a few tips to maximize your hair growth while wearing protective styles. When I wrote this post, I was thinking of Braids and Weaves, but there are quite a few ways to do protective styles. These tips apply to them all.

1. Make Sure Your Scalp Is Clean & Healthy before Install. – This should kind of be a no brainer. None the less, if you have bumps, redness, soars, are anything like this, wait until your scalp is healed. Likewise always start with clean dry hair (trimmed if needed) to get the best results.

2. Deep Condition & Moisturize Your Natural Hair. – If You are going to keep this style in for a few weeks, you want to make sure you are taking care of your natural hair so it doesn’t break off during this time.

3. Avoid Excessive Pulling And Or Tugging. This is so important! Your hair is not permanently attached to your head. Too much pulling and tugging will cause your hair to rip out right at the root. It could even cause you to lose sections of hair. If it hurts bad, take it out!

4. Massage Your Scalp Daily- This is to keep circulation going, and promote a healthy scalp. I use my favorite oil, but it works even if you just use your finger tips. This is part of my nighttime routine any way. But I just do it a little longer when I have a protective style.

5. Keep Your Hair & Scalp Moisturized and Free From Build Up. – It’s important to maintain a clean scalp at all times but especially when wearing protective styles. This will help you prolong your style, and avoid itching. There are several ways to keep your scalp build up free, even if you suffer from flaky scalp. The easiest way is to take a wash cloth with warm water,and a little shampoo if you prefer and simply wipe between the twists or braids freeing and removing  debris from your scalp. You could also do this same technique with baby wipes. Or for a deeper clean you can mix some Apple Cider Vinegar with some water, put it in a nozzle bottle and apply it in the parts of your hair. This does require rinsing. I usually put the hair in 2-4 buns so it doesn’t get all wet, and when I rinse I try to only let the water rinse my scalp.  Also there are lots of brands that make products for what they call “under care” it means your hair under your protective style.

6. Cover Your Head When Sleeping- Simple and plain. This helps to preserve your style, as well as protect your natural hair while you sleep. After all, that is the point of protective styling right!

7. Put Your Hair In A Bun Whenever Possible- this helps to reduce the tress on your natural hair. The more you keep it up, the less weight you have pulling on your tresses. And of course the obvious, it looks so cute!

8. Clean Your Hair & Scalp Regularly- I mean actually wash your hair. I’ve detailed and ACV rinse for your scalp above, that can also be used on your hair about once a month. I usually was mine about every 2 weeks. I take the shampoo ( right now I’m loving Eden Body Works Peppermint Shampoo) and massage it directly on my scalp. Then I put my hair in 2 buns and rinse it out when I get in the shower. You can let it air dry or you can sit under a hooded dryer.

9. After 6-7 Weeks A Protective Style Can Cause Damage. Now I know some people women who leave their weaves and braids in for up to 12 weeks or maybe even longer. However this is a very dangerous practice. After 6-8 weeks the hair begins to week and damage and breakage begins to occur for most people.

10. Carefully Remove & Detangle When Uninstalling- After one week two weeks are even 12 weeks, your hair has been shedding, (about 100 hairs a day) but the hairs have stayed in place because you haven’t manipulated it. Now the dead or shed hair can and will break loose when you remove the protective style. The hair shaft itself is in a weakened state so you want to be careful not to break off any more hair than has to. I normally remove my hair in sections, detangle and apply a prepoo all in one step. This helps me get ready to wash and deep condition shortly after I takedown my protective style.

Any questions? Lol, just remember wearing a protective style is all about maximizing your hair growth periods. In the past women wore them specifically for that reason. Now sometimes it’s about style, sometimes it’s about ease of lifestyle, or just plain laziness. What every your reason, these tips will help you make the most of it.

Well it’s officially the Summer 17 season. As we begin to slow down and get into the easy breezy summer feel, nothing says summer style like a great protective hair style.

I love protective styles, but I hate how long they take to install. Until now, the crochet technique is back on the scene, and I’m oh so happy!

The crochet technique is an old trend that’s become new again. I used to wear crochet braids back in the late 90’s ( Yeah I know some of ya’ll  were just babes).  But today’s styles and techniques are so much more advanced. The whole idea of the crochet braids is it allows you to achieve a great looking protective style in a fraction of the time.  There are so many styles and techniques out there today, but it’s just like us lazy naturals to find a short cut, to the short cut, lol.  We’ve gathered 5 of the most popular styles and found them in a crochet technique which not only slices the installation time, it also makes it easy for any and everybody to be able to do it.

1. Now this one is for the beginner ! It only requires that you can plat your hair.

101 Natural Hair Tips: 10 Tips For Healthy Color Treated Hair 61-70

To begin with, there is always this debate of is color treated hair still natural? In my book it is, although the color may affect the texture. But still to me, adding color is just part of the variety in the natural hair community.

Now there are many ways to color your natural hair. For the sake of this post, let’s assume you saw your favorite influencer and she posted what color she uses on her hair and you ran to the store and snatched it up! Hey it happens just like that most times. Anyway you colored your hair,  now what?

1. Start With Healthy Trimmed Hair: You want to start with your hair in its best condition possible to limit damage and increase your chances of getting your color the correct shade.

2. Limit Direct Heat: The direct heat from hand dryers and straightening tools increase dryness. Instead opt for over head dryers and no heat styling methods.

3. Use Products For Color Treated Hair: Preferably you want to use products made by the same brand as the hair color you are using. Now that your hair is color treated, you have specific needs to care for your hair in this state and its best to use products made for the state of your hair.

4. Look For Products With Water Soluble silicone : I know, I know, everyone says don’t use silicones! However the color will strip your hair of its natural moisture, so you need the good silicones to help coat and protect the hair. Some good choices are Amo- silicones which help with moisture, and are water soluble so they don’t cause build up on the hair shaft. Look for them in your conditioner and leave-ins.

5. Use A Daily Leave-In Conditioner: So I am a self admitted leave-in lover! If you don’t use a leave-in for daily maintenance  you should! Using a daily leave-in will help maintain moisture, and decrease brittleness that can occur with color treated hair.

6. Use Sulfate Free Shampoos and Conditioners: Now this is a must. The sulfates will dry your hair out. And we know, dry hair breaks! We do not want breakage !

7. Deep Condition Often: Now this is just a healthy hair practice period. But it’s extra important to deep condition when you have color treated hair. You want to add extra moisture and layers of nutrients every chance you get.

8. Do Hot Oil Treatments: The end game here is to protect the hair and avoid dryness. The hot oil treatment, or even the oil in your LOC Method, or just by running oil through your hair as you style will help to seal in the moisture and protect your hair. Not to mention it will add a little shine to your tresses.

9. Limit Manipulation Of Dry Hair: if your hair is not properly cared for it can become extremely dry. You never want to manipulate the hair in this state. It will break off right in the comb, brush or even your hand. To avoid breakage you always want to add some oil or water or both before trying to style, comb, or perform any manipulations on your hair.

10. If You Start To Experience Server Dryness, Breakage, or Brittleness Consult A Professional: This probably doesn’t need to be said, but just in case. If you can not maintain your color treated hair and you begin to see breakage or dryness and brittleness which will lead to breakage, please make a hair appointment with a licensed cosmetologist! Now I’m not going to say that all cosmetologist are great, but chances are you’ll fare better with an experienced professional than you will on your own.
